Cat toys, for cats!

We have a 3 1/2 year old black and white long hair cat, that we adopted from our local humane society this summer, and she loves to play! She has a yellow feather, several different balls, a tunnel, catnip and a scratching post. But, her favorite toy by far, is the little, pink, polka dot felt ball. That is her primary play toy. I don't know if other cats prefer this toy, but our cat does. She rarely plays with her other toys, unless we instigate the play with her. She will always play with the felt ball on her own.

Sometimes we hear her at 3 a.m. running and sliding through the house to chase her favorite toy. She tends to meow very loudly when she has her ball, as if to tell us she found it! She gets very talkative while playing with her favorite toy, she's doing it right now! I try to imagine that she thinks she is killing her prey, like a soft, furry mouse, over and over again. She still has fun performing this play action every day. She is not an outdoor cat, for her own protection, but she seems to enjoy playing with her pink, polka dot ball every day. It never gets boring for her. Maybe she is imagining that it's a different furry creature every time she chases it. Or maybe she really likes the smell and feel of the ball.

Some of her other favorite toys are catnip, the cat tree scratching post and the tunnel. The cat tunnel is a long tube about 4 feet, and it has two holes on the top for access. She likes to run through it after her ball and poke her head through the holes.

The scratching post is her second favorite toy. She sleeps on it, plays on it and of course, scratches it. I've seen very elaborate scratching posts at pet stores and I remember seeing a show on t.v. about a man who had made ramps and tunnels, up high in his house, for his cats. It was very cool! Her next favorite toy is catnip, we have a bag of catnip that we sprinkle on the carpet and she enjoys rolling in it and eating it. Catnip is versatile because you can put it in toys, as well. I have sewn catnip pillows for my cat which is fun, because you can get interesting, and colorful fabrics. Another fun activity for cats is eating wheatgrass, which you can buy in pots at the pet store. You can also buy Nepeta cataria (Catnip) and grow it in your house for your cat. But, be careful that your cat doesn't get too much catnip, in case of stomach upset.

Our cat plays fine by herself but we enjoy playing with her too. Sometimes we take a paper bag and cut some holes in it, or just leave it, and throw a toy in for your cat and they will go crazy running around in the paper bag. That's a cheap way to make a toy for your cat, or you can go to a discount store and also purchase used or gently used cat toys for a couple dollars.
